Does anyone know what size tap I need to use for a 1/4"x1/4" nylon hose barb that screws into the cell? I got it at lowes. I know it its pipe thread. I also know I need a tap that is 1/2"x?

I just don't know what the thread pitch/count? I had someone tell me 1/2"x18-NPT tap is needed. But I just want to make sure before I buy one.

If your hose barp is 1/4 X 1/4 that means 1/4 NPT thread and 1/4 ID hose size. Tou need a 1/4 NPT tap for your threads. 1/4 NPT is much larger than 1/4 SAE thread. Pipes are figured with inside diameter. The tap you buy will tell you the size of drill bit to buy.

Hey Guys,

I am building my first drycell this week and was looking for some answers about connectors in endplates when fuond this thread.

My endplates are 0.60 inch thick (15mm) and I need to get 1/2 elbow connectors in them, (picture below). Are they always tapped in the plates? not just pushed in it with white plummer tape?

Greetings,
Franky

Thanks for all the info. But that won't be a big enough hole. To push the threaded part of my hose barb into my plastic i have to drill a 1/2" hole. A 1/2"x20 and 1/2"x13 nut will only screw onto it 1-2 turns. I figure i need a tap that is 1/2" with a thread count some where between 14-18npt prob 18 and a drill bit size that is 29/64. I think i am just going to have to get a screw pitch/thread gauge to be sure.

Yes, They need tapped. You can not push them in they will leak. Many people have tried many different of kings of glue. Most without success.

Zach, A normal nut will never screw on to a NPT thread. NPT is tapered and requires a NPT tap. Gary is correct with the drill size.

Thanks again guys for the info. I will pick up a tap set in a few days and start working. I just know i can't glue into place ANYMORE!!! I am tired of leaks lol.

Garry,

Thanks for the advice on the tap size and drill bit size. I finally got around to buying the pipe tap and it worked out great, NO LEAKS.
