need help with my first cell

hi all
i have 8 plates 10cm * 10cm (stainless steel 304, 0.8 mm thick) ... it is +-+-+-+-
my power supply is 17 volt and 10 amp
the electrolyde is table salt

now the problem is .... when i put very little table salt the power supply heat very fast and i get 11 volt & 6 amp!
then i add more table salt and i get 5 volt& 4 amp!!
what is the problem here???

First off you need to lose the salt and use NaOH(sodium hydroxide) or the better electrolyte KOH(potassium hydroxide).Table salt is a bad excuse for an e-lyte for many reasons(see electrolyte section here).

Second can you tell us a little more about your cell design such what type design(wet,dry or dry flooded)and plate gap thickness.

Your heat problem may cause by your plate configuration and having too much voltage per plate,

+-+-+-+- Is too much voltage per plate especially running a wet cell design with a plate gap that narrow.Using a 17V power supply you would have over 8 volts per plate which very inefficient and you'll get nothing but a runaway heat(and amps) effect and would be making more steam than hydroxy gas.
Try reconfiguring your plates to +nnnnnn- which would give you about 2.4 volts per plate and using the KOH again instead of salt.I'd start with a ratio of 2 teaspoons KOH per gallon of distilled water to start then increase the ratio if needed.

actually his problem is more his power supply, if u get 17V and 10A, and it goes down in power that means u need a more powerfull power supply, changing plate setup is good, but my guess is that ur power supply will do the same thing.

Fly what's the voltage to your cell after you turn it on?

MTS may be right suggesting your power supply may be dropping too much when the cell is operating,and not able to handle the load.

Have you tried using a battery charger that has at least 50 amp yet?
