If you wanted to use something corrosive like salt as your electrolyte then it might be a good idea to help prolong the life of the steel. Unfortunately, once you start adding electricity to the mix all bets are off as to whether or not the passivation technique works.

If you use NaOH or KOH and keep your plate gap voltage down to 2 volts, then you wont have much need. I have been running my VSPB now for almost 5 months now and I see absolutely no damage to the 316L stainless steel.
