my first booster

well guys Ive finally finished my cell to test stage
its based on the smacks 18 plate GenII design

plates were prepped with a stone to give a rough Finnish
then i varnished the sides and back edges with motor winders insulation varnish
i thought this would be a good idea at the time but time proved that wrong

the cell plates where cleaned then assembled

i made a solution of KOH and deionised water to draw 7.5amps across the cells
the power supply I'm using is a PC power supply rated at 500w

so to my first test run sorry about the poor movie iam an amateur :D

i ran the cell for 1 hour starting at 7.5Amps after the hour the temp had risen to est 60c and the current draw was 13Amp

to wards the end of the hour i was getting foaming and quite a lot
but I'm putting this down to the varnish impurity's in the KOH

next test run will prove that

well any suggestions will be listened too so fire away

list of things to do b4 next test

clean all the varnish off the cell plates
clean and reassemble
insulate with heat shrink the link bars and supply bars

re run test to prove the foaming issue was related to the varnish

wrap the cell run test again if no problems with the above
test again

whats the configuration on that cell?

its 2 cells in parallel +nnnn-nnnn+
0volts to the centre and 12volts to the outside plate linked across the bottom to the opposite side cell as per the first picture in the thread

well ive re worked my original cell
it has now been changed to a 20 plate unit
+nnnnn-nnnnn+

so the cell now has 1 extra neutral on each side, the heat has come down and its not foaming so much now all the varnish has been removed,i have also insulated the supply and link bars in the electrolite

this was taken after the cell had been running for 2 hours the temp seems to be stable at 60C and dose not rise

KOH was set to 7.5Amp when cold, when temp is 60c draws 15Amps max
